Mentor Mistakes

Many companies, large and small, offer new agents a MENTOR.

It sounds like a great idea...here is a person who knows the ropes, maybe has even created a successful business of their own. Who better to get you started?

Beware!

Creating a business over a period of years, often through trial and error, perhaps based solely on longevity is not going to show you the way to getting productive before you go broke and fail out of the business.

A mentor is often too busy with his own business to give you the support you need. Mentors are not training specialists. Their job is to answer your questions...not to show you what questions to ask.

Be sure to ask, "Where will my next transaction be coming from?...and the one after that - forever!" If they cannot answer that question, they are worthless to you. Beware if they tell you to go get a listing!

You need a proven plan:: • One that trains you in specific skills
• One that trains you in proven communication skills
• Answers the where-are-my-customers-coming-from question
• Trains you in a proven plan to create a life-long stream of business that is independent of the state of the market.8
